Everyone has questions

We believe that everyone should have the chance to explore the Christian faith, ask questions and share their point of view; wherever they are in the world

What is Alpha?

Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the Christian faith, typically run over eleven weeks. Each talk looks at a different question around faith and is designed to create conversation. Alpha is run all around the globe, and everyone's welcome. It runs in cafés, churches, universities, homes, bars—you name it. No two Alphas look the same, but generally they have three key things in common: food, a talk and good conversation.

First up there's Food

Whether it's a group of friends gathered around a kitchen table, or a quick catch up over coffee and cake, food has a way of bringing people together. It's no different at Alpha. Most sessions start with food because it's a great way to build community and get to know each other

Then a Talk

The talks are designed to engage and inspire conversation. Usually around thirty minutes long, they can be given as a live talk or played as a video. They explore the big issues around faith and unpack the basics of Christianity, addressing questions from Who is Jesus? and How can we have faith? to Why and how do I pray? and How does God guide us?

Followed by: Discussion

Probably the most important part of any Alpha: the chance to share thoughts and ideas on the topic, and simply discuss it in a small group. There's no obligation to say anything and there's nothing you can't say (seriously). It's an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective in an honest, friendly and open environment

The Alpha Course

Alpha gives everyone the opportunity to explore the meaning of life in a relaxed, friendly setting.  The Alpha course usually meets once a week for 10 weeks, including a one-day getaway.   Sessions begin with a meal, followed by a short talk and time to discuss the topic.
What is it?

Sometimes it’s easier not to ask questions but on Alpha we think that life is worth exploring, so your questions are welcome no matter how ‘out there’ they are.  Alpha is a series of interactive session sectoring the meaning of life.  It’s fun, relaxed and with no pressure (that’s why 22.5 million people worldwide have already done it).

ALPHA is an acronym for:

A—Anyone interested in finding out more about the Christian faith;
L—Learning and Laughter;
P—Pasta (eating together gives people the chance to know each other);
H—Helping one another (small groups are used for discussion of issues raised during the lectures);
A—Ask anything. No question is seen as too simple or too difficult.

Who’s it for?

Got lots of meaningful questions?  Never really understood the Christian faith or been to church?  Maybe you gave up on it a long time ago.  Alpha was designed for you, or anyone who don’t go to church much, if at all.

How does it work?
Alpha is made up of small groups of about 12 people with at least one host and helper.  Each session (of which there are usually around 10) includes a short talk, a bite to eat, refreshments and a chat with your group about the talk.

Courses vary in size.  Our current course is meeting in the St James Church Centre and there are about 18 people attending.  The Alpha course begins at 7:00 pm with a meal and we always end promptly at 9:00.

Many who have taken the course say the program has been a tremendous help and that their faith and knowledge has been strengthened because of the Alpha Course.

Our current Alpha Course began in January but it is not too late to join (or to book for the next one).
